Kate Williamson
Kate Williamson’s imagery may stem from the landscape of childhood but it forms a response to the complexities and contradictions of 21st century living. Scenes and characters from fairy tales and other stories heard in the nursery are rearranged and reinvented to present alternative narratives, often juxtaposing the childlike optimism of innocence with sinister mischief. Williamson usually sculpts her characters first, then draws and gets to know them, before they appear in her prints and paintings. She has created an intriguing world that is at once familiar, yet strange.
